Do you ever have those moments, as you’re going through your day-to-day life where you stop and say to yourself, “this is absolutely perfect. Everything is absolutely perfect”? That is how I felt this weekend for every waking moment of it.
We kicked off Mother’s Day weekend with a visit to my parents house on Saturday to celebrate all together as a family. I love when we can all get together at the same time since I know we all have such busy and different schedules. My dad cooked us up some delicious cheeseburgers for dinner and it was the perfect summer meal. Is it just me, or is there something about the smell of something cooking on the grill that just gives you that summertime feeling? So yummy. My sister and bro-in-law made me the most incredible, handmade Mother’s Day gift that absolutely had me in tears.
We spent the rest of the day out in the backyard with cocktails, music and tossing the football around. It was so much fun to watch Wyatt run around the backyard, running into everyone’s arms to be tossed up into the air. He loves that so much and his laugh is something I could listen to on repeat all day long. Again, I caught a glimpse of how big my little boy is truly getting.
My parents don’t have a fence in their backyard and normally when we take Wyatt out there to run and play it’s bound to end with him trying to run out into the front yard, then the street and up into someone else’s garage. This often leads to a roaring meltdown in the middle of the parents cul de sac. Much to my surprise, on this particular day, Wyatt not only stayed in the backyard but listened to us when we told him not to run out in the front and to stay with us. That might not seem like a major milestone like, “Oh, wow great job your kid is behaving like kids should”, haha. But for me it comes down to him acknowledging things we tell him that are being said to keep him safe. All of that to say, it was an absolutely perfect day.
Haha, not to end the day on a bad note BUT we did keep Wyatt out a bit past his bedtime which threw his entire night off. We got home around 9 and promptly put Wyatt down for bed. Fast forward to 1:30 AM and now Wyatt is in our bed where he will sleep horizontally for the remainder of the night. I say that like I mind, I don’t. I love rolling over and seeing his sweet little face while he is sleeping so peacefully. Knowing that he felt scared in his own room and feels comforted and safe enough to fall asleep cuddled between his mommy and daddy makes me so happy.
Tyler let me sleep in on Sunday, Mother’s Day, because well he’s an angel. Then I woke up to the sound of little feet running down the hallway. I opened my eyes to breakfast in bed prepared by my sweet husband and little Wyatt. Wyatt was so excited he kept pointing at everything on the tray trying to say the words to make sure I saw.
After breakfast I came downstairs to the most wonderful morning with my family. We played, ran around the house and then I slipped out to the store for a few things we needed while Wyatt took his nap (a nap that he went down for no problem, another Mother’s Day miracle). He took a super long nap I think because he was a little restless sleeping in our bed the night before.
Once Wyatt woke up we got him dressed and went outside to hang with dad while he smoked a brisket. We made up a little snack plate of cheeses, meats and pita chips. It’s super random but a good charcuterie board is one of my absolute favorite meals? foods? whatever, haha. We listened to some Frank Sinatra, drank some cocktails and watched Wyatt run around with his bubble gun.
Again! Let’s go back to the Wyatt listening thing. We don’t yet have a fence in our backyard either so when we go out back it’s always a toss up if Wyatt is going to stay in the backyard or flip out when we tell him no he can’t go run around out front. But again, my little champ proved us wrong and was an angel. He tried to go around to the side of the house to play with the hose and when we sternly told him no, he pouted, but came right back over to us.
Dinner was absolutely delicious, Tyler is such an amazing cook! We ended the night giving Wyatt a bath and playing around a bit more upstairs. I recently got a new full length mirror and he is obsessed with watching himself in it. It’s actually super cute. Then it was bedtime and once AGAIN, Wyatt gave me the best Mother’s Day gift he could. He let me read him some books and rock him in my arms, singing our signature bedtime song “baby beluga” while he drifted off to sleep.
I don’t know what I did to deserve this precious little family of mine. I feel like when you’re younger you envision what your life is going to look like. What your day-to-day is going to be and who will be there sharing it with you. And then one day, you wake up and there you are…you’re living it. This weekend made me realize just how truly lucky I am. Needless to say, it was an absolute perfect weekend.
